PractiSource would like to provide a quick, final reminder regarding the new Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers. New MBI’s (patient Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers often simply referred to as a patient “Medicare Number”) will be required for all service starts starting January 1, 2020.

The new numbers do not contain the beneficiary social security information, and are therefore much more secure. All beneficiaries have already received their new cards containing their new MBI.

Medical practices and medical laboratories should verify that they are already have this information for all patients moving forward and submit only claims containing the new MBI’s. If you provide services after January 1 and submit claims with previous numbers, these claims will be denied by Medicare.

Important tip – each Medicare intermediary or MAC has an MBI lookup tool on their website. Using this tool, you can utilize a patient’s previous number or SSN to determine their new MBI.

Please feel free to contact us at PractiSource at Info@practisource.com if you have any questions whatsoever.
